When did the Church decide it needed such grand edifices, who was feeding the poor and starving when these grand palaces were being built to the glory of God?

From what I can tell, they were more interested in saving the poor's souls than their skins, and obviously the way to do that was to impress the hell out of them.
ReplyDeleteThe other thing is that most cathedrals started off life as monastic - and monasteries were run as businesses! The more impressive the church, the more likely the rich were to leave you something in their wills.
Monks in general had double standards, just look at the misericords it was a requirement for the monks to stand up during several hours of service, but they instead leaned their bums on the misericords. The carvers realised they were cheating, which is why so many profane carvings have been placed under the monks rears.
